An Internet of Things seminar was held on the morning of November 17th at TMA Tower. Dr. Son Vuong, a professor from Columbia University in Vancouver, Canada, delivered an informative talk to an audience of TMA’s IoT group, interested engineers, and participants from universities.
Around fifty people with a huge interest in this strategic innovation trend attended the seminar. Some participants shared their insights and experiences in IoT projects at TMA and IoT research projects in university. The passion of the attendants and the intensive knowledge of the speaker made the session more of an interactive discussion than a lecture.
Dr. Son Vuong explained the core concepts of Internet of Things; about 5A’s and 3I’s, the 4 levels of smartness, and the opportunities and challenges of IoT in academics and business. He pointed out that current software development methods are highly modular with APIs, highly distributed with Cloud computing, and loosely coupled with SOA. The development methods, therefore, must meet the requirements of being open, rapid, and safe.
The professor also talked about the recent protocols for IoT, like the Last 100m Protocols of Smart Cities, Smart Industries, Smart Homes, Smart Healthcare, Smart Wearables; Fog Computing, holograms, beacon systems, and ant-sized IoT passive radios to name a few. He also addressed networking issues, the Internet of Good Things, and Internet of Harmful Things.
During and after the presentation, the speaker and participants also discussed machine learning, the latest innovations in the field, and the ways that we can leverage the huge potential of our smarter planet. The professor emphasized that IoT is a big opportunity for countries like Vietnam, that have a young and dynamic labor force who are keen on innovation and can learn new technologies quickly. He inspired the attendants with a lot of practical advice on doing research and software development with IoT technology.
In the last 5 years, TMA has delivered about 10 IoT projects for clients in the US, Australia, and Europe.
This event is part of the New Technologies Seminars hosted by TMA R&D Center. The last seminar was about Big Data & Data Analytics, and also attracted a large number of attendants.
